Walker Honors Wade Harvey and Mike Lapierre of Wreaths Across Greensboro as December Community Heroes of the Month
GREENSBORO, N.C. – U.S. Representative Mark Walker (NC-06) honored Wade Harvey (pictured left) and Mike Lapeirre (pictured right) as the Sixth District Community Heroes of the Month for December 2017.
Each month, Congressman Walker honors a constituent, business, or organization in his district for displaying extraordinary acts of service and for making a difference in their community.
Inspired by the annual Wreaths Across America ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, Wade Harvey and Mike Lapeirre worked to organize a similar event in the Greensboro area. The two fathers hoped to use the ceremony to educate their own children about freedom and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
Wade and Mike contacted Wreaths Across America and selected Forest Lawn Cemetery in Greensboro. With help from friends, family, and volunteers from the community, the pair have laid 1,100 wreaths in the veteran’s section of the cemetery every December since 2013.
“During this season, it is vital to remember the servicemen and servicewomen who have sacrificed so that we may know the blessings of freedom,” Walker said. “Seeing an opportunity to make a difference in our community, Wade and Mike took action and organized a powerful ceremony to show gratitude to our veterans. Because of their efforts, generations of heroes now know that we are thankful for their service and that their sacrifice will not be forgotten.”
Walker presented Wade and Mike with a certificate and a flag flown over the U.S. Capitol in honor of their service.
This year’s honor ceremony will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery on Saturday, December 16th at 11:00 a.m. You can learn more about Wade and Mike and the Wreaths Across Greensboro ceremony here.
